Paint Buying Tips

No or LOW VOC paint is the first consideration for interior walls.

Anyone planning to paint their home soon should ensure they are adequately prepared with information regarding the best types of paint for the spaces they will be painting. When selecting paint, there are a few factors to consider.

No or low VOCs

No or LOW VOC paint is the first consideration for interior walls. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the chemicals that cause paint to smell. According to the American Lung Association, VOCs pose a threat to human health and irritate the eyes, nose, and throat, causing difficulty breathing and, in extreme cases, damage to a person’s nervous system and organs.

It’s best to avoid using paint with high VOC levels; instead, look for paint labeled “low VOC” or “no VOC.” These paints are readily available at retail outlets and specialty paint stores.

Color and sheen

Because walls are typically not built as straight as hoped, most homeowners choose an eggshell or flat-finish paint to hide the imperfections. Matte-finish paint is best for ceilings as there is no way to hide its imperfections. However, homeowners might want to enhance the light reflectivity of a higher-sheen finish. In these cases, adding a little bit of light through a glossy finish is the best way to do this.

Dirty rooms

The dirtiest rooms in a house are kitchens and bathrooms. Since they are some of the most-used spaces, they gather dust and dirt. Homeowners can use semi-gloss paint because the finish makes cleaning easier with a damp cloth. The same is valid for doors and trim.

There are several factors to explore before buying paint for a home. The easiest way to answer the questions is to hire a professional painting contractor. They will be most familiar with the paints on the market and can advise homeowners on the best paint for their spaces.
