Step-by-Step Guide to Painting a Room

Whether you have a big or a small room, a fresh coat of paint is all it takes to revamp its appearance and give the space a perfect look. Painting is one of the most popular and inexpensive DIY home improvement projects among homeowners. When you can hire a licensed painting contractor for the job, the flawless painting of the room is unmatched.

Once you have selected that perfect paint color and have chosen the desired finish for the room, the painter brings all of the essential paint supplies like a paint tray, sandpaper, painter's tape, paintbrushes, rollers, and plastic sheets.

Here is our step-by-step guide to painting the room for those having it done for the first time:

Step 1: Prepare the room

The more spacious the room, the easier it will be to paint it. To avoid any mess, we will:

Move all the heavy furniture, curtains, and other things that can hinder the process.

Make sure that the doors and windows are open and the room adequately ventilated.

Cover the floor with a drop cloth or plastic sheet to protect it from stains.

Step 2- Prepare the wall surfaces

It is essential to ensure that the walls are clean and smooth before applying paint by removing any dirt or stains and sanding and scraping the surface to create a uniform foundation. Also, we will treat the walls needing repair of holes or cracks that need filling. The room's corners, trims, crown molding, windows, and door frames are covered with painters tape.

Step3- Priming

If the walls are in bad shape, or while painting a light color over the existing dark one or painting over wallpaper, we'll use a primer. It will help to bring out the sheen, offer adequate coverage, and ensure a uniform appearance. Sometimes, if we use paint that already has primer, we'll skip the above procedure.

Step4- Paint the ceiling

The first thing we paint while beginning to paint the room is the ceiling. It is beneficial as even if some paint drops on the walls, it can be wiped, and they will anyways be painted later on.

Step5- Paint the trim and baseboard

After the ceiling, we paint the trim and baseboard. It is much simpler to paint these areas before the walls than to do them later.

Step6- Paint the walls

Once the ceiling paint dries, we'll cut and roll the walls with at least two coats in a W pattern and use a brush in the areas to paint where we can't roll. For a uniform finished look, we roll in the same direction. After we allow the paint to dry completely, we'll allow a gap of six to nine hours before applying the second coat.

Step7- Painting the doors and window frames

Next, we'll tape the area where the trim meets the wall and start painting the window frame, windowsill, skirting boards, and doorframe.

Step8- Clean up

Once we have finished painting, we give it ample time to dry and wait for a few hours to see if any touch-up or another coating is required. Then we remove the plastic sheets and reseal the remaining cans of paint.

Painting a room, when done correctly, makes it look cleaner and offers a fresh look. Follow along with our step-by-step guide to watch us create a perfect paint job.
