2020 Paint Trends That Will Outlast This Decade

Every year we see new paint trends popping up, and some tend to outlast the others. Knowing that painting the interior or exterior of a home or office isn't something that you want to undertake every year, we've gone ahead and compiled a few paint trends you'll still love in the coming years.

Painting with grays

Gone are the days of beige, and most recently, "greige?!'. Wall colors on both the interior and exterior of homes have gone gray, and honestly, we're here for it. Whether you're choosing a living room, kitchen, or outdoor space, grays paired with bold accents have crash-landed into this new decade.

One trend we're seeing is that cool grays are out, and warm grays are in. While the use of grays will continue to change over the next three to five years, we can confidently say that gray is here to stay for this upcoming decade. Try pairing your warm gray wall with terracotta accents or coral furniture to keep things fresh and neutral at the same time.

Proper paint prep

As a tactical paint trend, more and more people are opting to work with professionals when it comes to painting their homes or doing adequate paint prep when not. It pains a professional painter to have to clean up the mess of poorly taped walls, non-pressure washed exteriors and redoing nightmare paint jobs. Proper paint prep and application is critical for the space to look its best when the paint has dried.

Even a savvy DIYer might not know that interior paint tends to look darker than the color initially picked from the swatch as shadows and lighting affect them. In contrast, exterior colors look lighter due to sunlight. Our pro tip is to do three or more side by side comparisons before committing to a color. Save yourself the headache by testing a small area before painting an entire wall and realizing you're not a fan.

Wallpaper is back

If you don't usually spend your time researching or trying new paint trends, you probably winced at the thought of wallpaper. Perhaps you were remembering back to that floral or fruit print that littered the walls of your relatives' home, ruining the good name of wallpaper for the last few decades. We get it! Bad wallpaper is just bad, but there are some fantastic wallpaper trends that are subtle, sleek, edgy. Even the most adamant disbelievers will be opening up their design minds to consider wallpaper this decade for their next wall project.

Some designs to look out for this year: tropical and botanical, chintzy (elegant, vintage, floral), 3-D wallpaper, art-deco or retro, metals, and gradient wallpapers.

Shopping locally

As a locally-owned and operated business for more than 30 years, we don't think shopping local will ever go out of style. Our amazing Tampa consumers agree that avoiding Big Box stores in favor of getting the personal touch of a local business is a worthy trend. More and more consumers are interested in getting the best product and experience that a painter can offer, and we're glad to say that shopping locally provides that. Additionally, shopping locally keeps more money in the local community, helping other small businesses thrive.

So whether you're ready to dive into a whole new home repaint or want to refresh one wall, these 2020 paint trends will provide you with an enviable space for years ahead.
